Smoked Broccoli

Sharing is caring!

Want to add some smoked broccoli to add to your spare ribs or brisket? Even my meat-loving family can’t deny a juicy smoked floret.

I’ve made this a bit of a staple to my cookouts now because it’s so easy to do and I like having adding extra veggies to the meal.

Why You’ll Love This Smoked Broccoli Recipe

Broccoli is full of fiber and nutrients like Vitamin K and vitamin C and like most vegetables can be thrown in with your meat into the smoker.

Most people are worried about throwing their veggies into the smoker because they’re afraid the veggies will either wilt or shrivel up, but if you follow this recipe with the temperatures I’ve tried, you’ll end up with juicy, crispy and delicious smoked broccoli.

How to Prepare the Broccoli

Give the broccoli a good wash. Then go ahead and cut bite sized peices off the brocolli, as if they’re the size of small brown mushrooms.

Just make sure that whatever size you’re cutting that they’re all the same, because you want the florets to cook evenly.

If they’re uneven, you’ll have some florets that are harder than others and it’s never a good experience.

If you want to keep the stemp on the broccoli and cook them in large pieces you can, but just make sure they’re all large, so they cook evenly!

How to Smoke Broccoli

To smoke your broccoli always use a tray or small foil boat to hold the broccoli in the smoker.

Don’t just throw the broccoli on the pellets without a tray because the florets might end up at the bottom of your smoker and using a tray makes it easier to transport your broccoli in that way.

Of course if you are working with larger pieces you might not need the tray, I’d recommend using a cooling tray to hoist them up on.

How Long to Smoke Smoked Broccoli

I like to let my broccoli smoke for 45 minutes to 1 hour so they turn out nice and crispy, but if you want them less crispy and more on the softer side, take them out earlier.

Best Wood Chips for Smoked Broccoli

I generally like to add my veggies in half way through when my meat has been cooking in the smoker.

Usually I’ll have already used either one or a combination of hickory, apple, maple, cedar or pecan to go with my meat.

There’s no need to use different wood chips because these are fruity and sweet wood chips and they will complement the broccoli well.

How Do I Know When My Smoked Broccoli Is Done?

You’ll know when your broccoli is done when it’s lightly charcoaled on some of the ends of the vegetable and if you take a stick and poke it should be tender and soft of the inside.

The color will also be a slightly darker green than when raw.

It also just depends how you like your veggies, some people prefer them close to raw for that crunch, but having them in the smoker will make some of the ends crunchy and if you’ve had them in the smoker for a good hour, the inside will turn out soft and tender.

Tried this out and it was a hit with both the BBQ and veggie fans! I made sure that the broccoli was well-doused with oil and just did a sprinkle of kosher salt.
I have an electric smoker with an apple wood preference.
